  1. Not very far from this district there is the ruin of the old Great House. In this Great House in older times the land lord of the surrounding districts lived. This landlords name was "Ponsonby". He was a descendent of the Ponsonby's that came to Ireland with Cromwell in the year sixteen hundred and forty nine. Before Bromwell and his followers came to Ireland Crotta demesne as it was then called was ruled over by the Stacks and thus the mountains around it got the name Stack's mountains. When the Ponsonby's arrived they went to war with the Stacks and defeated them
