    After that it was cloved with a cloving-tongs by a number of girls. The girls of the locality used always help one another at cloving-time.
    The event was always celebrated with a dance.
    Then the thread was bleached and taken to the local weaver by the glowers to make linen of it.

    Introduction
    This account was related by Mr. Bartholomew Hickey of Meenleitrim, Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry.
    He is a farmer. Meenleitrim is his native townland and there he has lived all his life.
    Thatched houses are becoming rare along the main road leading from Abbeyfeale to Castleisland.
    No newly-built houses are thatched and the thatched ones are gradually being replaced by solid well-ventilated slated buildings all over the
