    ever to the "Poor House." The people at that time lived chiefly on potatoes and salt. Candles were used for giving light. The people made all the candles they needed in their own homes. They made them in the following manner. The fat of the cow was melted into liquid and then poured into a mould. The mould was pointed at one end and open on the other. At the open end was a piece of iron to which the wick was attached. This kept the wick (cotton) in the centre of the mould. The mould was placed in a sod of turf in which there was a hole. The pointed end of the mould was inserted in this hole and the liquid was poured into the mould at the other end. When the liquid cooled and became solid the "candle" was ready for use.
