  1. The people of olden times were able to make candles. They made them with grease and rushes. They melted the grease in a little can. They peeled the skin off the rushes. They dried the rushes first, before they peeled them They left a small piece of the skin on to keep it straight The rushes were twisted. They dipped the rushes in the grease. They left the rushes standing in a can. They put the grease in the can. As the rushes burned out, the turned up the rushes. They left the light up on the window.
