  1. A sailing ship called the Sierra Leone trading between the
    West Coast of Africa and England ran ashore on the North Strand Rush in Dec 1863. She had on board a cargo of palm oil and teak. The majority of the crew were black men. They wore belts on which were attached pockets of gold dust. They wore gold rings on their fingers and in their ears also.
    When the bodies of the crew were washed ashore the Rush people became very rich. They cut the rings from their ears and fingers and sold it at a very high rate.

  2. The Industry was a coal boat trading between England and Dublin. At the time she was bringing coal to Dublin. She was washed ashore in Oct 1888 on the South Strand and became a total wreck. The rush people secured most of the coal. The crew were all lost with the exception of one man. This man bound himself to the mast till the storm was over. He was rescued when the storm was over.
