  1. Another old industry carried on in Rush was the catching and curing of fish. There were 10 large luggers engaged in fishing. Each boat had a crew of seven men. The principal fish caught were ling conger, ray (any) and herrings. The boats left the habour on Monday morning for the fishing grounds and returned with their catch on Friday even-ing. They had enough food on board to last them for the week. The chief item was potatoes which they used with the fresh fish they caught. They also had a cask of fresh water and a supply of tea sugar and bread. Each member of the crew took his turn at cooking except the Skipper.
    The conger, ling, and ray were caught with hook and line and the herrings were caught with nets. Some of the fresh fish were sent to the Dublin market but the most of it was dried and salted. The ling and the conger were cleaned
