The people long-ago used get married between the Twelfth Day and Ash Wednesday and only very few used to get married at any other part of the year. Usual days for marriages were Mondays Thursdays and Saturdays. Between the Twelfth Day and Ash Wednesday is called shrove tide.
When a man was going to get married he used to send one of his friends to ask the girl. If the parents did not like the man they would give excuses. If the boy and girl did not know each other they would appoint a day to meet in the town. If each of them was satisfied they would go to a public house and make the match. The boy perhaps would ask €150 they might bid him €100 and divide the 50€. They would appoint a day to go and see the boy’s place.
