  1. In my native district of Drimoleague marriages always take place during Shrove. That period of the year between Little Christmas Day and Shrove Tuesday which is a movable feast date and is always the day before Ash Wednesday. The days considered unlucky to get married are Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the Month of May, Lent and Advent. It is not known why these days and months are unlucky. In May the old saying is "Marry in May and you'll rue the day".
    Matches are made in my district. If so and so wanted to get married and he didn't know anyone that was suitable. His neighbour comes along and says "I know a girl with a lot of money and I'm sure she would suit you". The person that makes the match is called the "spéicéir". So and so
