  1. There was a hedge-school behind in Stonehall beside Johnie Staunton's house and its remains are there yet. Daniel Colman was the teacher who taught in it. He was a native of County Donegal but he lodged in Stauntons. The teacher taught out in the fields. The teacher was paid by the scholars who brought in a sum of money every week.
In a field near Muckroo there once stood a hedge-school. An old man would teach reading, writing, and arithmetic who got paid every week. On the stones of the field the scholars would sit when writing. The teacher was a man named O'Donovan. Close to this school was a bridge named O'Donovan's bridge and people say that that is the cause it was named O'Donovan's Bridge.
Near this place, where MacHugh's house stands to-day was an old school. It is said that a man named Dunleavy taught in this school.
