  1. The Potato Crop
There are a lot of potatoes grown around Skerries, they are called Skerry Blue and British queen.
My daddy has a garden full of potatoes. He got a man to help them him to see the potatoes, the man he got was called Jimmy Mansfield.
This is how they prepare the ground before they set the potatoes. They plough the ground very carefully and pick up all the old potatoes. Then the ground is ready to saw the potatoes.
Seed potatoes have got three holes in the middle of them. Sometimes farmers instead of using seed potatoes get eating potatoes and cut them in three and then set them with plenty of manure.
There are some farmers that lend their men to other farmers to get their potatoes out of the ground before the winter comes. If you were in the country the children would get a fortnight from school to help the farmers to pick the potatoes. The pay they would get would a halforown daily and their meals free.
