    About six miles from Tuam in Edward Ford's land in Lehid there was a school long ago. Mr. Courtney was teaching in it.
    He was paid at the rate of one shilling and six pence a quarter. The scholars paid him.
    He hated Irish, anyone he heard speaking it he would slap them. The children sat on forms. When he was going to call the rolls he would whistle on the children. They wrote with quills and tied their ink bottles to their coat buttons. All children under eight years wrote with pencils on slates.
