    Now, Joan, she made answer,
    With her eyes filled with tears:
    "I have worn no shoe
    With the past forty years;
    I've now purchased a pair
    Which is here to be seen;
    They're not half large enough,
    Though they're number nineteen"

    With the lady's assistance,
    Joan rose to her feet;
    Jumping and limping,
    She went through the street.
    The town-boys assembled
    To witness the "show,"
    And the puddle and pebbles
    At her ankles did throw

    Then long Daniel Curtin
    Took pity on Joan,
    And up on his shoulders,
    He took her safe home.
