  1. In the years 1846 and 1847 a great famine swept the country-side. It affected this part of the country very severely.
    The potatoes rotted in the pits and houses in which they were stored in the year 1846. The following year the potato crop failed completely. The people ate the mangolds and turnips and whatever the rotton potatoes that were not completely destroyed the first year, but the second year the mangolds and turnips failed as well as the potatoes.
