    Valentia. Many a bale of this cotton was washed ashore and the people made quilts out of it. For years afterwards you could see the spot where the ship went down as white foam was around the spot.
    About the 1878 a ship from New Orleans with yellow grain ran into Kells harbour and got wrecked there, three months it took this ship to come. This ship was bound for Cork and took the wrong course. A pilot from Dingle by the name of Flaherty came to tow it into Valentia with the cargo on it but they were unable to do so. Then the coast guards and the neighbouring men went out to unload her for a day and a night and worked hard. These men were unable to eat as they were disgusted with the smell of the oil of the ship. When they had her unloaded a scine boat from Gleesk, two from Kells and one from Rhoades came to tow her into Valentia. As they were on the way they met a boat from Coonana coming to her assistance. When they got to Valentia they would not pay the men for the work they had done, they cut the ropes that tied the ship on to the boats and threatened them with guns and told them be off, so the poor men reached home exhausted and worn out with hunger and hard work and badly thanked.
