   There are no bitterer memories in Ireland than those of the penal times, which began very soon after the Treaty of Limerick had been signed and which Treaty according to an old saying was broken "before the ink where with twas writ was dry": Others say that it was not broken until the last of the Irish Regiments went into exile which was much the same. Those were the times when Mass was celebrated on many a high bleak mountain side and deep and lonely glen with the rocky ledge on the mountain side and the moss clad stone in the glen to serve as an alter. "Carraig-an-Aifrinn." "The Mass rock". Many of which are to to be found all over Ireland at the present day where for year and years Mass was offered up in secrecy. There are several of such mass rocks on different parts of the Comeragh mountains. There is one on that part of the mountain near the boundary of the two Parishes of Clonea and Rathgormack.
