- The local landlord was the Earl of Shaftsbury, whose family name was Chichester. The family have been landlord in the district for about three hundred years. They never lived here but they lived in England. They were very good landlords, they gave a perpetuity lease to people who were able to buy them at a big price, and other leases to people who had not as much money to buy them, for sixty nine years. The landlord got the land after the rebellion of Sir Cahir O'Doherty in 1608. Sir Caher O'Doherty was chief of Innishowen, which lies, between Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly. The land was divided among tenants, about sixty acres to each tenant. There were some quarter lands given to sub-landlords, and they were not as good as the head landlord for there were evictions, and raising of rents in some cases. In one case in the district of Muff Co. Donegal, the sub-landlord called into the house of a tenant one day, and left his hat down on the(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
