  1. Hedge Schools 12/7/38
There were two hedge schools in my district. One was held in Séamus Ruadh's. (James Kearney's) barn in Toome on the road from Kilcogy to Gowna. My Grandfather does not remember the teachers names but he says they were not strangers. They lodged in the houses where they taught.
The pupils were seated on large oak logs which were placed on large stones along the wall. They had no desks but the large stone desk the teacher used is still to be seen beside where the school was held on the opposite side of the road.
