  1. Marriage customs about fifty years ago were very different from what they are now. Most of the marriages took place at Shrove-Tide. Before the marriage took place the match was settled by the parents of the boy and girl to be married. This business was done at a fair or market and at it was settled the amount of the dowry to be given to the girl. The day on which the marriage was to take place was also arranged.
