  1. I've a sad but true story to relate,
    Of a brave ould Shandrum man's cruel fate,
    He was a labourer of local fame,
    And John in Ludden it was his name.
    When he was scarcely forty years of age,
    On Carrowhill Road he did engage,
    The wife declares she will have his life,
    But I'm afraid ould Drass helped to cause the strife.
    Now Drass was working at some meadow hay,
    Oh! On the evening John got his fortnights pay.
    And they met on Carrowhill Green,
    Oh by dad says Drass we'll have some poteen.
    Oh! no, says John we'd have to go too far,
    You be dammed says Drass your not in the know,
    Come on with me sir, and hold tongue,
    So poor John consented and the deed was done.
    Now this poteen is awful stuff,
