  1. Long ago in this parish there lived a man who had a regular craze for card playing. He would go any distance playing, or any hour, as long as he would have company and returning, home one moon-light night about one or two o'clock passing near a fort he began to light his pipe. Whe he had the pipe lit just starting for home when suddenly he came face to face with a strange man. "Good night" said the card-player who was so well used to be out by night and was afraid of nothing in the line of fairies as he never met them. "Good night" said the stranger "have you any news." "No then I have not," said the other.
    "Well you wont be so said the strange man as he drew a handkershif from one of his pockets."
