  1. On the olden times there were hedge-schools in Kerry. There was a hedge-school in Willie Galvins field in Tonevane. They were taught out under the open air, and whenever the days were raining they went into the farmers' sheds.
    The teachers lodged in the farmers' house. The masters and the pupils spoke nothing the whole day but Irish. The pupils wrote with feather pens, and with slate pencils on slates.
    The schools at present day are not like the schools that were there in the olden times. The books they had were very
