  1. Traces of ruins and old houses are very plentiful throughout the country in Ireland, Even in this district they are very numerous, and they are a great help to us, as they give us an idea of how the people lived in days gone by.
    About a mile from the school there is the ruin of an old dwelling-place. It is over-grown with grass and there is nothing standing but the four walls. It was a forge in olden times, and one of the two rooms served as a bedroom and kitchen, while the other was the work-shed.
    Long ago stone dwellings with slated roofs were unknown. The people built their own houses with clay, mud and turf and roofed them with heath or rushes. These houses contained no more than tow rooms. There was no glass in the windows and half-doors were used in every house.
    Very few of them had chimneys but the fire was built in the centre of the floor and the smoke went through
