  1. Miss N. Tarpey from Lassinay used to teach in Horkan's house in Carrowkeel. A teacher named Paddy Judge used to teach in the old chapel in Ballyhaunis. In those schools writing was done on a slate. No blackboards were used and the children were seated on a sod of turf. The children were supposed to bring their own seats to school because they were allowed to stay in the building during the three months of Summer. During the winter nights the house where the teacher was staying was
