  1. About an acre of potatoes is sown on our farm every year. My father prepares the ground. He ploughs it February and makes some of it into ridges and some into drills. The ridges are then "settled" with the spade or the harrow. For the drills the land has to be ploughed twice, then the drills are 'opened' and the manure laid along in the hollow thus formed. The slits are placed over the manure and then the drills are closed. There is very little further trouble with drills except to scuffle them when the weeds begin to appear and the horse does all
