  1. It was a custom around here to " salt " the girls who were not married before the end of Shrove. On the last market day in Shrove the girls and boys went to the market. The boys bought pockets full of rough salt. The boys stood at the corners whilst the girls walked up and down the street. When the girls came along the boys pelted salt on them, sometimes even into their very eyes.
    This was considered great sport and it was said the salting would keep them fresh for another year.
