- Long ago the girls and boys were up to twenty years of age before they got a pair of shoes and they'd be about half that much time waiting for a new pair. Some people never wore boots winter or summer. There is a man who goes by the name of John Clancy somewhere between Enniscrone and Crossmalina. He never wore a shoe and goes about in the frost and snow and does not seem to feel the cold.
Most of the children go to school bare footed in Summer. There are not many shoe-makers around the place now because few of the people sear shoe - maker shoes now but long ago the people most wore shoe-maker shoes. After the people washed their feet in the night, they never threw out the water without putting a quenched coal in the water.
