  1. Parafin-oil was not known in Ireland in our fore-fathers' time. Some people never used artificial lights in their houses. They had the house-work finished before night-fall, and they sat around the fire telling stories until bed-time. For light when they had any they got a good bunch of rushes. These were hung from the rafter to season. They were dipped in fat and when cold were ties in bunches and hung from the rafter. One or more of those were lighted and the candlestick was sod of turf with a hole in it. This sod as well as
