  2. Long ago when there was witchcraft in Ireland the people of Mucknagh had a large space of land. This land was called a common and each person had an equal share of this land. One morning there was a man out hunting and he saw a hare milking one of the cows. The man drove away the hare and told all the neighbours. Beside this common was a hut in which no one lived. When the neighbours heard about the hare they gathered all the dogs and hounds of the village and went to catch the hare.
    One black hound followed the hare to the hut and bit the hares leg. But the hare climbed up along the hut and went down the chimney. One of the men went into the hut and he saw an old woman sitting by the fire. The man saw that the old woman's heel was covered with blood. Then the man knew that
