    a leg in a pot or an oven and making it "as good as new" if not better. when a man had watched a blackthorn or ash twig grow until it was strong enough for a walking stick, and when he had seasoned it in the chimney or behind the rafter for a year, his next job was to take it to the forge to have the smith put an iron ferrule on the end of it. The smith was usually paid once a year. Every man in the district paid him a certain amount. in this way the smith was assured of a regular income.
