The old people heard of the big wind of 1839. It was the worst storm that could be remembered. The wind was from the west and they say the taste of the salt water from the sea was in the rain. The water was up as high as the mearing fences around Mannin Lake.
Long ago there used not be a drop of rain for three months of the summer and the summers used to be so hot that the cows used to be running in ceasbach into Mannin Lake. After the dryness great thunder storms used to come which used to do great(continues on next page)- Collector
