  1. There were hedge-schools in this district long ago. There was one in Derryronane, Swinford and Mr. White was the teacher. He was Mrs Quinn's granduncle who lives in Derryronane, Swinford. Each one he was teaching brought him a penny a week and this was his payment for a week. He used to lodge free with any people who invited him and in this case he used to teach the children free. He never left Derryronane because he was born and reared in it.
    They used also teach in barns and the owners of these gave the barns and fire for nothing. In Summer they were taught out in the open air. (In Summer. In S they were) The chief subjects were, Irish, English, Latin and writing. The
