  1. I am a lonely exile who has left his own dear nation
To seek a situation in a land beyond the farm
I've sailed across the ocean wide through hardships and through danger
And for years I've been a stranger in my native Irish home
There once I lived contentedly, friend I loved surrounded me
Care or grief never trouble me nor made my heart feel sore
But now those days are over me and I am parted from my country
And Kilnamartyras's homely face my eyes shall see no more
But love of memory tempted me from my poor cabin home to flee
And go across the raging sea in search of golden store
So I sailed away from Erin bound for the land of libery
And bad my friends (and relatives /n Ireland) good by for ever more
It was there my heart was happy until I took the mind
To go across the ocean from the Isle that gave me birth
