- A hedge school existed in the townland of Lisduff about three miles from Carrick-on-Shannon in the parish of Kiltoghert Co. Leitrim in the year 1821. It was called Lisduff hedge school by the people of the locality. A small house, built by the farmers from clay and rough beams of wood, with the roof thatched with rushes, acted as a school-house for the pupils in winter. During the hot summer weather the classes were conducted in the open air. The name of the teacher is unknown. As he was a stranger to the locality, he lived in the houses of the neighbouring farmers. Each pupil brought twopence a week as a fee for his education.(continues on next page)
