  1. Where glides by Leitrim's verdant fields the Shannon's lordly flood,
    Upon a gentle sloping lawn McRannal's Castle stood.
    And down through countless centuries within its turrets gray.
    Did native chieftains exercise an all but regal sway.
    And oft within its spacious halls the bard poured forth his lay.
    To mail-clad warriors brave and true, and ladies fair and gay,
    And told of deeds of valour done on many a battle plain.
    Or else of Love's bright conquests sung in softest, sweetest strain.
    While from his harp the minstrel grey drew music half divine.
    Each sturdy clansman pledged his love in cups of Spanish wine.
    And in the midst the chieftain stood and viewed with honest pride.
