  1. Up to quite recently the parents of both parties met at a local fair or market and a match was introduced, usually at the bar in a public house.
    The fortune the lady was to get would be much discussed and very often after the match being settled and everything arranged there would be a break up - where the man having the place or holding would ask for another ten pounds or so.
    The parties most concerned - the prospective bride and groom - might never have seen each other on these occasions until the match was completed.
