  1. Long long ago before candles or oil were available in this country, the chief light was the Rush candle. These candles were made from suet and withered rushes. In the Autumn when the days were about to get short the man of the house went out through the fields with a hook and cut a bundle of the longest rushes available in the district. He brought them home then and left them in a dry place until they withered.
