  1. There was a man one time named John MCabe and he lived in Sunnaghmore. He went to Scotland to earn his living, and his job was minding sheep and cattle. MCabe used to have to stay out at night with the cattle. There was a fort in the middle of the field where he was working and there were big trees growing in the fort. On wet and stormy nights the cattle used to go in and lie in the fort and MCabe used to go in and lie with them too. This night MCabe was lying under a bush in the fort and a little red man came out of the bush and said, "Ara how are yeh, Johnnie MCabe, the whole way from Sunnaghmore. You'd make better of your time if you'd go home and dig under the old buaitree bush in your own garden for there's a crock of gold there." And the little man told MCabe that the gold was guarded by an eel, and that the only thing that could kill the eel was a black cat without one white rib of hair on her, and that he'd have to wait till some one would give him a present of such a cat.
