- Marriages frequently take place during Shrove(?) or on Shrove(?) Tuesday. Matches are made in this district. there is a wed[ding] feast held in the grooms house or in [the] hotel. Money and goods are given as [a] fortune. A few days before the marriage it takes place. The groom buys a ring for the bride. The day of the wedding the bride had a brides maid with her and the groom has a best man with him, some people say Fridays and Saturdays are unlucky days for marriages, and May and December are unlucky months for marriages. When the bride and groom come home the straw-bows come in and they dance reels and jigs. The straw-boys wear very big over coats and a big hat made of str[aw] which they make themselves. They stay in the house for about three or four hours. the bride has to be married in her own parish.
