    Long ago in Ireland marriages used to take place before lent. People would not get married Friday or Saturday as they thought those days unlucky. In those days they used to walk to the chapel to be married. then they would invite their friends to the marriage feast and it was the custom that the boys around who would not be asked to the wedding feast would meet and change clothes with each other and make hats of straw and pull them down on their faces and disguise themselves and go to the wedding house and dance and amuse themselves for a few hours and then leave for home. They were called the strawboys.
