Some people say the castle is haunted and that some-times carriages and people are seen driving up to the castle. Of course these people are dressed as in olden times.
There is a castle in Glinok which belonged to the Bourkes also. A man named Liam Garbh lived in this castle. It is said that he fought duels in France and Spain and all over the Continent. No man was able to kill Liam and the inhabitants of the place hold that he was the best man in Connaught if not in Ireland. This story is told of Liam Garbh, that one day he was out hunting and feeling hungry entered a little house in which an old woman lived. He asked her to allow him to cook some food which he carried with him over her fire. But the old dame refused so Liam in a rage lit a pound note and kept on lighting notes until he had cooked his dinner on the flames which the money made.
Liam Garbh's effigy is carved on a large stone in an old church which is now in ruins called Ballinakill. This church is in the neighbourhood of the castle. Liam wears armour in the picture and in his hand he holds a sword. HIs head is uncovered and a little dog is beneath his feet. A piece is taken out of his leg and it is said that this was a wound in his leg which he received when fighting a duel.
