    No one was allowed to leave the house (while) with a coal or lighted pipe while a churning was making for the same reason. Another custom was to put a little coal (griosach) or the "sock" of a plough under the churn. There are many stories of the bringing of butter by certain people and strange to say these people had the reputation of always having plenty of butter. Anybody who wanted to "bring the butter" would go into the byre or field where the cows were somebody else's
