  1. There is only one forge in this parish and the smiths name is John Kilcommins. The forge is situated in the roadside and it is near a crossroads and a stream. The roof of the forge is slated and there is no door in the forge. There is but one fireplace in the forge. In his work the smith uses an anvil, a sledge, a hammer, a rasp, and an knife for pearing the hoofs. He uses coal in the fire. He shoes horses and asses. He makes ploughs and harrows. When he is shoeing wheels he does it in the open air. The smith is a very big strong man. There is a disused forge in the outskirts of Castle blakeney. It was owned by Thomas Qualter who is now dead. He died the time of the flu. He was a famous walker. He used to walk to Athenry in the morning and work all day in
