  1. The famine in 1846 affected this district very much. The district was very thickly populated before that time. The people still point out sites of houses then occupied and now in ruins.
    The potatoes decayed in the ground and afterwards in the pit. The seed- potatoes were sown the following year broadcast like grain.
    The people had Indian meal for food. Government relief did reached the district.
    The people died in great numbers. Great sickness followed the hunger.
    The people talk about periods of famine and distress due to the failure of the potato crops.
