  1. Marriages are frequent around Shrove and it is said to be very lucky to be married around shrove. Long ago there were matches made before every marriage. In years gone by there was money given as a dowery. Some of the old people in this district remember marriages in the houses, but it was no later than ninety years ago. There is always a wedding feast held in the bride's house. Strawboys generally visit the house. They ware big straw hats with all kinds of coloured paper hanging from them and they also ware belts of straw. The strawboys generally ask the bride out to dance. There is usually "a hauling home" and the husband brings the bride home by the hand. There was never a race home on horses.
