    harden for a few minutes - then they put it down and baked it on a bread-iron front of a fire. They baked every day.
    A cross was cut on the top of a cake. They mostly baked in an oven.
    Bread was often baked in front of the fire standing against a support. The support was called a "bread iron", it was made of iron and it was the shape of a horse shoe. Griddle bread was made.
    At Christmas and Easter they made a currant apple cake.
    I got this information from my father.
