  1. Long ago when the Penal Laws were in Ireland, there were many old schools and the most important were the hedge schools.
    They had no pens or pencils to write only a burned stick and the English Book was a twopenny Primer.
    While the hedge-school master was teaching he had a pupil watching to tell him if the "Red Coats" were coming and if they were he would hide. They had a great love for Irish and sometimes even Latin and French were taught at these schools
