  1. Long ago candles were made of rushes and the fat of a pig or a sheep. The rushes were peeled and a small strip of the peeling was left to keep it together.
    The fat was melted in a tin at the fire and the rushes were dipped in it. Sometimes they plated two or three rushes together to keep them firm.
