    Collected by Thomas Francis Whelan, Drumgorman, Leitrim, from his mother Mrs B Whelan.
    In preparation for potato planting my father first cleans the field of all rushes and rubbish it may contain. Then he covers the field with farmyard manure to decay, and lets it find its way into the soil. This is often done six months before the field is tilled. About the 15th February my father commences to dig. First of all he score the field into ridges. This is done by stretching a scoring line the length of the field, which is held fast at both ends by a piece of stick attached to the line and stuck into the ground. When the ridge is formed it is about twenty four inches wide. If the crop is good a
