  1. My Grandmother told me of the night of the big wind (1839) which she heard the old people talking about. There was terrible destruction done by it. The roofs of the houses were stripped and the trees were uprooted. A lot of people lost their lives trying to tie down the roofs of their houses. So from that out the people built their houses in hollows to protect them from the big wind.
