In the townland of Sidhe Mór in the parish of Gowel there lived one old basket maker. His name was John McDermott. He is dead over forty years, sad he was a very old man when he died. He made two kinds of baskets namely shopping baskets and baskets for teeming potatoes. Then he used to boil, peel and dye rods for fancy work.
He sold the baskets in the neighbouring towns. His home was still to be seen at Sidhe Mór. My grandmother is eighty nine and she does not know how he dyed the rods.
My grandmother was reared in Cornacranaghy, near Drumkeelanmore.
